HazChem / ADR - Carriage of Dangerous Goods by Road

A HazChem / ADR Training Certificate is required for any driver who operates a vehicle which is used for the transportation of dangerous goods by road throughout Ireland and the EU. We offer both Initial Basic Training with Tanker specialisation and Refresher Training.

Our training is offered by Eamon McEvoy, who is approved by the Health and Safety Authority (HSA) to provide ADR (Hazardous Chemical) Driver Training. We offer courses in Sligo, covering the North West area.

Our ADR / Hazardous Chemical (HazChem) Training Course covers the regulations and safety procedures relating to the carriage of dangerous goods by road contained in packages, IBCs, Bulk and Tanks. Certification is valid for 5 years and refresher training must be done in the final year of current certification. To obtain a Training Certificate the driver must:

Attend (in full) a course at an Approved Trainer Provider
Successfully pass the Chartered Institute of Logistics and Transport Examination. (Exam costs are additional to our course fees.)

Initial Basic Training

Drivers transporting dangerous goods in packages, drums or IBCs in vans, curtain side trucks, HGV’s, box vans or freight containers are required to attend a 3-day Initial Basic (Packages) Course and pass the CILTI Initial Basic examination.

Course duration 3 days Cost €350

Tanker Specialisation

Drivers transporting hazardous substances in tank carrying vehicles (e.g. road tankers, tank containers, demountable tanks etc.) are required to attend the 3-day Initial Basic course and an additional 2-day Tanker Course and pass both the CILTI Initial Basic exam and the Tanker exam.

Refresher Training

The ADR HazChem Driver Training Certificate is valid for 5 years. To extend the ADR HazChem driver Training certificate, a driver is required to attend a Refresher course and pass the appropriate CILTI examination before the certificate expires.

Drivers transporting goods other than tanks require a 1 day refresher training

Refresher Packages 1 day Course Cost €200

Drivers transporting good in Tanks require a 2 day refresher training.

Refresher Tanker 2 day Course Cost €350

Course Modules

Initial Basic Day 1
General information, Competent bodies, national and international regulations, Personal protective equipment, ADR mandatory equipment, driver duties during emergency transport, supervision of parking of vehicles, load segregation, routing and tunnels.
Initial Basic Day 2
Day 2. First Aid including CPR, Fire awareness and fire extinguisher requirements, UN packaging scheme, types of packages, vehicle marking and placarding and IMDG placard requirements.
Initial Basic Day 2
The chemical classes. Sources of information, segregation of substances, Primary and secondary hazards, technical terms and the individual characteristics of each of the chemical classes 2,3,4,5,6,8, and 9.
Tanker Specialisation Day 4
Tank definitions, responsibilities of the employer, approval of tanks, general applications regulations, documentation, IMDG markings, Maximum allowable working pressure, tank equipment and fill ratios.
Tanker Specialisation Day 5
loading procedures driver’s responsibilities, static, overfilling, tank discharge, and cvehic; ie behaviour.

The exams are held every Thursday in various locations: Dublin West County Hotel, Chapelizod; Oranmore Lodge Hotel, Galway; and Carrigaline Court Hotel, Cork.
